Job Description: Film Archivist
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Film Archivist to join our library and information science team. As a Film Archivist, you will be responsible for managing and preserving our extensive collection of films, ensuring their accessibility and longevity. Your primary focus will be on organizing, cataloging, digitizing, and preserving film materials while adhering to established archival standards and best practices. The Film Archivist will play a crucial role in safeguarding our valuable film assets and making them available for research, education, and public viewing.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement comprehensive strategies for the preservation, organization, and digitization of film materials in accordance with industry best practices.
- Assess, sort, and prioritize incoming films based on their historical, cultural, and research value.
- Conduct thorough inspections and evaluations of film materials, identifying and addressing any physical damages or deterioration that may occur over time.
- Create detailed cataloging records and metadata for films, utilizing appropriate software and databases to ensure accurate documentation and easy retrieval.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote and facilitate access to film collections, both internally and externally.
- Manage and maintain the film archives, ensuring proper storage, handling, and security measures are in place.
- Oversee the digitization process, including film scanning, restoration, and preservation of digital copies, while adhering to industry standards.
- Provide expertise in film preservation techniques and assist in the development and implementation of preservation protocols.
- Conduct research and respond to inquiries related to film collections, leveraging your knowledge of film history, genres, and industry practices.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in film archiving, constantly seeking innovative ways to improve workflows and enhance accessibility.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field. A Master's degree is highly preferred.
- Proven working experience as a Film Archivist or in a similar role, demonstrating expertise in film preservation, cataloging, and archival management.
- In-depth knowledge of film history, genres, formats, and preservation techniques, with a strong understanding of industry standards and best practices.
- Proficiency in using archival cataloging software and databases, such as Archivists' Toolkit, ArchivesSpace, or similar systems.
- Excellent organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative, problem-solving skills, and a proactive approach to achieving goals.
- Familiarity with digital preservation standards and technologies, including film scanning, restoration, and digital asset management systems.
- Strong research skills and the ability to analyze and interpret film materials, providing accurate and informative responses to inquiries.
